Exploring the Role of the Sociology Laboratory in the Independent Curriculum

The Sociology Study Program together with the Sociology Laboratory (Labsos) of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University held an MBKM curriculum seminar with the theme "Role and Supporting Sociology Laboratories in Independent Curriculum Development". This event was held in a hybrid manner through Zoom Meetings and offline in the Interactive Center (IC) room, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UIN Sunan Kalijaga on Tuesday 19 July 2022.

This event presented two speakers, namely Dr. Yunindyawati, former head of the Sociology Study Program at Sriwijaya University, Palembang and Dr. Arie Wahyu Prananta, the Head of Sociology Study Program at Trunojoyo University, Madura (UTM) moderated directly by the head of the Fishum Sociology Laboratory of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, BJ. Sujibto, MA This seminar was also attended by the Sociology Study Program lecturers, Kanita Khoirun Nisa, MA, Dwi Nur Laela Fithriya, MA, Ui Ardaninggar Luhtitianti, MA, and Dr. Napsiah, S.Sos., M.Sc., as well as several members of the Sociology Laboratory who attended directly in the IC room.

The ceremonial event took place solemnly, beginning with the reading of the holy Qur'an, singing of the national anthem Indonesia Raya and the Hymn of UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The event then continued with a speech delivered by the Head of the Sociology Study Program, Dr. Muryanti and Dr. Mochamad Sodik, S. Sos., M.Sc. as the Dean of Fishum UIN Sunan Kalijaga. In his speech, Mr. Sodik, Dean Fishum's nickname, emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities through MBKM in order to strengthen graduates.

The moderator started the session at 09:45 WIB by underlining the remarks from the Head of the Sociology Study Program about the purpose of the seminar, which is to share experiences on how the preparation and readiness of the sociology laboratory is to make MBKM a success, including the form of programs and other forms of support that have been carried out by the two universities. . The sociology laboratory at UIN's Sociology Study Program gained knowledge and experience from two speakers.

In the main event, the first speaker, Dr. Yunindyawati said that the Independent Curriculum is an era for us to collaborate with each other, not compete with each other. In addition, the era of disruption has a massive impact that challenges how the sociology laboratory should be prepared optimally. Those who can survive in these changes are those who are responsive to the changes. The strategy is to adapt. In the academic realm, how to revise the curriculum that is adapted to existing changes is a form of adaptation process to the challenges of the times. In addition, Dr. Yunin also conveyed the role of the sociology laboratory in developing the Independent Curriculum. “The laboratory as a learning resource center plays a role in encouraging effectiveness and optimizing the learning process through various functions.

Meanwhile, the second resource person, Dr. Arie Wahyu Prananta conveyed the purpose of implementing MBKM to improve the competence of graduates, both soft skills and hard skills, so that they are ready and relevant to the needs of the times. In addition, Dr. Arie also conveyed aspects of the benefits for students who took part in MBKM, such as being able to gain experience and knowledge in the practical world as well as getting networking at work or being directly recruited to work by the company that became the internship. The experience of the UTM Sociology Study Program in utilizing MBKM is focused on local potentials in Madura which are the focus of student development which is in line with the vision and mission of the UTM Chancellor.

The event ended after a dynamic discussion, both initiated by the moderator himself and by questions from the participants. The moderator emphasized at the end of the event that the two resource persons came from universities under DIKTI (Directorate General of Higher Education), while the organizers of the event were under DIKTIS (Directorate of Islamic Higher Education). Although some programs are technically and practically different, the moderator still emphasizes the form of sharing experiences and potential collaborations that can be explored.
