Exploring The Role of Laboratory in Supporting the Independent Curriculum

The Sociology Study Program in partnership with Sociology Laboratory (Labsos) Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FISHUM), Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University held a seminar with theme "The Role and Support of Sociology Laboratory on The Development of Independent Curriculum". This event was held in hybrid through Zoom Meeting and offline at Interactive Center (IC), FISHUM, UIN Sunan Kalijaga on Tuesday 19 July, 2022.
This event presented two speakers, namely Dr. Yunindyawati, former head of Sociology Study Program of Sriwijaya University, Palembang and Dr. Arie Wahyu Prananta as head of Sociology Study Program of Trunojoyo University, Madura (UTM) with a moderator by B.J. Sujibto, M.A., as a head of Sociology Laboratory. This event was also attended by lectures such as Kanita Khoirun Nisa, M.A., Dwi Nur Laela Fithriya, M.A., dan Dr. Napsiah, S.Sos., M.Si., and many members of sociology laboratory who attended offline at IC.
The ceremonial event began with reading of the holy al-Quran, singing national anthem Indonesia Raya, and the hymn of UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Then the event continued with a speech delivered by head of sociology study program Dr. Muryanti and Dr. Mochamad Sodik, as the Dean of FISHUM UIN Sunan Kalijaga. In his speech, Mr. Sodik, emphasized the importance of collaboration among universities through MBKM (The Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka - Independent Learning Independent Campus) for strengthening the alumni.
The moderator started the session at 09.45 WIB with underlining speech from the head of sociology study program about the seminar, that is for sharing experiences on how preparation and readiness of laboratory to support MBKM having conducted by the two universities in which speakers are from. Their experiences are expected to be lesson-learned by the sociology laboratory of UIN.
The first speaker, Dr. Yunindyawati said that Independent Curriculum’s era has challenged us to collaborate rather than to compete. Besides, the era of disruption has a massive impact that challenges how sociology laboratory must be ready optimally. Who can survive in these changes are those who are responsive to the changes? In the academic, how to revise the curriculum is adaption process with the existing changes and the challenges. In addition, Dr. Yunin also explained about the role sociology laboratory in development Independent Curriculum. "The laboratory is a media for learning center as a role in encouraging effectiveness and optimizing the learning process through many functions. They are for services in order to increase the competence of lectures and students, the function of research, and development, and also other relevant function to strengthen an effectiveness and creativity of learning," she said.
Meanwhile, the second speaker, Dr. Arie Wahyu Prananta conveyed the purpose of implementing MBKM to improve the competence of graduates, both of soft skills and hard skills. Dr. Arie also said the aspects of the benefits for students who took a part in MBKM by getting some experiences and knowledges in the practical world as well as getting networking at work or directly recruited by the company in which they take internship. The experience of the UTM’s sociology students in utilizing MBKM is focused on local potentials in Madura which is the focus of student development which is in line with vision and mission of the UTM Chancellor.
The event ended after dynamic discussion, both initiated by moderator or questions from participants. The Moderator emphasized at the end of event that two speakers came from universities under DIKTI (Directorate General of Higher Education), while the organizers of the event is under DIKTIS (Directorate of Islamic Higher Education). Although some programs are technically and practically different, the moderator still emphasized the form of sharing experience and potential collaboration that can be explored. The event closed according to the schedule at 12.00 WIB - (Novira-21).
