The Sociology Department of UIN Sunan Kalijaga towards Internationalization

Friday (23/8) 2019 the Sociology Department of UIN Sunan Kalijaga held a workshop and curriculum review in the meeting room of the Faculty of Social and Humanity Sciences, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The event was attended by the leaders of the Social and Humanity Sciences Faculty like, the Chairman of International Office, lecturers of the Sociology Department, alumni, students, and the speaker, Dr. Falikul Isbah, G.D.Soc., M.A., a UGM lecturer with experience in establishing international classes at UGM.
In the opening, Dr. Mochamad Sodik, M.Sc., the Dean of the Social and Humanity Sciences Faculty, said that the Sociology Department potentially becomes an international standard department in which some lecturers graduated from leading foreign universities. Besides, the Sociology Department becomes a pioneer in this faculty because it received BAN PT A accreditation for the first time. Also, the department registered for AUN QA certification which would be visited in 2020.
The Deputy for Academic Affairs, Dr. Erika Setyanti Kusumaputri, said that it is important to conduct a curriculum review considering the Sociology Department which has implemented the KKNI curriculum since 2016. The implemented program would get input from both alumni and graduate users to support the progress of the Sociology Department excellently.
The event is divided into two parts. In the beginning, the focus was on reviewing the KKNI curriculum. In this section, the Head of Sociology Department, Achmad Zainal Arifin, Ph.D., said that the program was to engage collaboration with users and alumni as well as listening to views on the Sociology Department curriculum. Moreover, the department will respond to the UIN Sunan Kalijaga program to ‘world-class university’ by forming an international class.
Guided by Dr. Napsiah, she begins by providing an overview of the KKNI curriculum and mapping the expertise of the Sociology Department lecturers. In her presentation, Dr. Napsiah explained an outline of the KKNI curriculum as follows:
One of the purposes of the Sociology Department is to excel and lead in the guidance and development of Islam and sciences for life. Meanwhile, the other objective of the Sociology Department is to integrate and develop Islamic, scientific, and Indonesian studies in education and teaching. The goal is to produce scholars who have academic and professional abilities that are integrative-interconnective which are implemented in the KKNI curriculum.
In the KKNI curriculum, the references are the outcome which can be measured from 4 criteria, attitudes, general skills, special skills, and knowledge. Therefore, it would lead to the profile of students becoming practitioners and academics.
She conveyed that so far the Sociology Department has mapped fields of lecturers such as the Sociology of Religion: Acmad Zainal Arifin, Ph.D., Dr. Yayan Suryana, and Drs. Masdjuri, M.Si., the Political Sociology: Dr. Phil. Norma Permata, MA., Acamad Uzer, Ph.D., Dr. Astri Hanjarwati, MA., Dr. Napsiah, and UI Ardaninggar Luhtitianti, MA., the Sociology of Economics: Dr. Sulistyaningsih and Dr. Muryanti., the Sociology of Technology and Popular Culture: Ambar Sari Dewi, Ph. D., and Agus Saputro, M.Si.
After the presentation, the event was continued with discussions with alumni, alumni users, students, and lecturers. The results of these discussions are recorded and taken for advisement in implementing the KKNI curriculum.
In the second part, the occasion was continued by presenting Dr. Falikul Isbah, G.D.Soc., M.A. who was guided by Ambar Sari Dewi, Ph.D. (Candidate). In his presentation, the speaker shared his experiences in opening an international class at UGM. The international class at UGM has been established because it was formed from the university, while the faculty prepares one of the elective courses for foreign students. These courses are also offered to local students who they already know that the course is a foreign language course, called ‘emertion’. So, each faculty has prepared at least one course in English. In addition, the block system in courses is used. Subject A, for example, will be completed in just a few weeks with ‘team teaching’. Besides, Dr. Falikul Isbah, G.D.Soc., M.A. also gave an example of RPS for the international class.
