Sociologist Taken for Granted? : Sociology Study Program Curriculum Responding to the Challenges of the Age.

Monday (2/9) 2019 in venue 301, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, the Sociology Study Program welcomed students of the Sociology Study Program with the theme "Sociology Study Program curriculum welcomes future challenges".

A total of 82 2019 new students participated in the learning socialization which was guided by the secretary of the study program, Dr. Napsiah, opened the event by reading a pledge stating that she is proud to be a Sociology student and will do well in both the academic and non-academic fields so that the Sociology Study Program will be more victorious with the presence of Sociology students class of 2019.

The event continued with a presentation on the KKNI curriculum that has been implemented since 2016. Achmad Zainal Arifin, Ph.D. as the Head of Sociology Study Program conducted a brainstorming to find a definition of sociology. After getting responses from various opinions about the definition of sociology, Zainal played a short 2-minute video about sociology.

Achmad Zainal Arifin said that the KKNI curriculum is international, so students are asked to strengthen their English in various ways, such as watching YouTube. Furthermore, Zainal said that Sociology has a broad study so that it can be integrated and interconnected with various scientific disciplines, such as fisheries which will become a sociological study if the fishing industry will influence people's behavior. Likewise with studies such as in medicine, the field of religion, and many other realities in society that can be studied by sociologists.

It's just that our weakness is taken for granted. This is the task of sociologists, which must have critical power through scientific reasons. This is the difference between western society and eastern society. In the east, they will always be together, while in the west they will talk about individuals. In terms of individual and collective values, this is the most basic of the differentiation. Therefore, we must be critical in seeing a reality. If you are critical then you will change yourself.

In connection with that, by studying Sociology, you will be able to see yourself and put yourself in society. Thus, sociology becomes a tool because when you know sociology, it can be applied in society. Thus, if you are not from sociology in high school, there is no need to worry about entering sociology, because sociology can integrate into various disciplines so that sociology is getting richer in the field of scientific studies. Thus, reading becomes a medium for updating the information which in turn can master the application of a much more established sociological theory. The KKNI Sociology Curriculum can take you to see the reality in the society which always changes according to the era. (Napsiah)
