Inauguration of the Management of ISI Yogyakarta Region 2019-2023 and National Workshop

On Monday (9/7) the Indonesian Sociological Association (ISI) in collaboration with the UMY Islamic Political Study Program held an inauguration activity for the Management of ISI Yogyakarta Region 2019-2023 and a National Workshop with the theme "Indonesian Democratic Reinvention" with the speaker Dr. Haedar Nashir, the Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah. The inauguration of the ISI management and workshop occurred very interestingly at the UMY 4th Floor Postgraduate Building.

Also attending this event were Dr. Mochamad Sodik, M.Si who is also the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr. Sulistyaningsih, M.Si, who is also the Deputy Dean for Division III of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Achmad Zainal Arifin, Ph.D. as the Chair of the Sociology Study Program, Dr. Napsiah, M.Si as the Secretary of the Sociology Study Program, Ambar Sari Dewi, M.Si as the Head of the Lab. Sociology, Dr. Muryanti M.A, Agus Saputro, M.Si and Management of Sociology Student Association.

The event began with the inauguration of the ISI management, namely by mentioning the names of the ISI management, followed by a symbolic handover of the ISI Management Decree for the 2019-2023 Period by M. Najib Azca, Ph.D., a representative from the Central ISI to Dr. Suharko, M. Si as the chairman of ISI Yogyakarta Region, then taking a picture with the appointed ISI management.

The next event was a workshop with material delivered by Dr. Haedar Nashir moderated by Dr. Zuly Qodir, M.Ag, a UMY Government Science Lecturer who is also the head of the committee for this event. At the beginning of the workshop, Zuly Qodir explained that the theme "Reinvention of Indonesian Democracy" was chosen because of the current momentum of discourse related to the post-presidential political climate. At the beginning of the discussion, Haedar Nashir conveyed Muhammadiyah's roles in creating a conducive political climate in Indonesia through various books and Muhammadiyah activities. Haedar hopes that society will build critical and interpretive thoughts amid positivistic thinking. Haedar also explained that the current contemporary national issue is the strengthening of identity politics (leading to radicalism) and democracy that is currently taking place in Indonesia.

According to Haedar, identity politics was born by excessive liberal democracy. Seeing Muslims themselves, Haedar pointed out them as "small clothes", there are Islamic groupings due to political interests and they define Islam very narrowly and feel exclusive. At the end of the workshop, Haedar offered a solution to reconstruct or intervene against radicalism. He also said that Sociology friends need to come up to explain cases of nationality with various perspectives or paradigms so that the interpretation is not narrow.
