Yogyakarta, March 10, 2025 – The Sociology Study Program, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FISHUM), Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University of Yogyakarta, held a guest lecturer from Germany, Professor Sabine Brombach, who is none other than an expert in social research methods. This time, together with the lecturers of the Sociology Study Program, they intensively provided direction to two Sociology Lecturers who will strengthen their expertise in the field of methods and will also continue their doctoral studies. Dwi Nur Laela Fithriya and Nisrina Muthahari had the opportunity to discuss their research themes in front of experts from the German Senior Expert Service (SES), Prof. Sabine. With a very familiar condition, the two Lecturers received direction in scientific writing.
The opportunity was not wasted by the two young Lecturers of Sociology. They enthusiastically learned and asked about how to write scientific papers that are accepted globally. Prof. Sabine kindly provided a step-by-step explanation of scientific writing. The discussion began with the selection of a theme to be studied. As he had often mentioned at previous guest lecture meetings in the Sociology Study Program, Prof. Sabine said that the selection of themes is global, so that the world knows about the discussion in the research. There are many interesting issues that can be raised as global issues which of course are supplemented with current literature with global themes. Professor Sabine emphasized that research must begin with a deep understanding of the phenomena being studied and their relationship to the theory used.
The use of theory becomes a framework for answering the questions asked. Professor Sabine said that the use of Grounded Theory is an approach to developing theories from empirical data. The relevance of old theories in current research is also a topic of discussion. Professor Sabine emphasized that although certain theories were developed in the past, researchers must explain their actualization in the year the research was conducted (2025) so that they remain relevant in international academic studies.
Regarding how to display data, Prof. Sabine said that the selection of methods is very important. Whether the research is qualitative, quantitative or using mixed methods so that the presentation of the data can be understood using the right method. Proper presentation will make it easier for readers, especially journal reviewers to understand the logic of the research. The author explains in detail the reasons for using the method. The selection of informants and also the triangulation process so that the phenomena studied can be drawn globally.
This discussion provides insight for Lecturers to compile research that not only meets national standards but also fits the scope of international journals. With this approach, it is hoped that the quality of research by Lecturers in the FISHUM Sociology Study Program will increase and can contribute to global Sociology studies. Thank you Prof. Sabine for your enlightenment today, hopefully it will be useful for learners like us. (Dwi Nur Laela Fithriya)
